FIFA 2022 WORLD CUP FINAL
On an extraordinary night in Lusail Stadium, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe lived up to their heavyweight billing as the two stars traded extra-time goals before Argentina sealed a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over France to win their first FIFA World Cup™ since 1986.
Messi opened the scoring and looked set for a straightforward triumph until France recovered being 2-0 down. Angel Di Maria had doubled Argentina's lead before Mbappe became only the second man after England's Sir Geoff Hurst to score a World Cup final hat-trick.
The Paris Saint-Germain teammate won the Golden Boot with eight goals but Messi still takes the spoils. France pinned a visibly rattled Argentina back but couldn’t claim the winner, while Hugo Lloris tipped over a rising drive from Messi at the death.
Messi opened the scoring and Angel Di Maria doubled their lead before Mbappe's remarkable 97-second one-two hauled France level. Messi struck to restore Argentina's lead but Mbappe equalised for a second time.
The game had barely restarted when Coman relieved Messi of possession to instigate another raid.
Mbappe cushioned Adrien Rabiot's aerial ball back for Marcus Thuram, then darted forwards to meet the flighted return with a volley that flew past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Argentina regained their composure in time for the extra half hour, and it was Messi who would strike again to restore their lead. But there was no denying Mbappe again as the Paris Saint-Germain teammate levelled from the penalty spot.
The match then went to a penalty shootout, which Argentina eventually won 4-2 thanks to a crucial save from goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Messi's long-awaited dream of winning the World Cup was finally realised, and the Argentina genius was able to savour the moment as his teammate Mbappe won the Golden Boot.
Martinez's save from Kingsley Coman's spot-kick was instrumental in the victory, and Gonzalo Montiel struck.
However, it was not enough against a superior Argentina team. The World Cup Final was a thrilling affair, with both sides giving it their all. It was a fitting end to an exciting tournament and what a final . Possibly the best to date that private plate king can remember .
Who was your money on? We think Argentina were firm winners from the start and had a class above anyone this year and didn’t it show?
France’s penalties were a little lack lustred to say the very least, and what was Messi's penalty all about?
